Escalante Utah Ruins

When visiting Escalante, discovering Anasazi Indian ruins should be on your itinerary

If you enjoy exploring spectacular scenic landscapes, make your base camp in Escalante. Ruins, petroglyphs, natural arches, slot canyons, and petrified forests can all be part of your itinerary when you visit this ruggedly beautiful, remote wonderland. Some of the favorite hikes in the area are the Escalante River Gorge, viewing the wondrous rock formations of Devils Garden, and following a small stream to Lower Calf Creek Falls, where you can view Ancestral Puebloan ruins, rock art and other historical points of interest a long the way. Escalante is within 30 miles of all of these trailheads.

If you are interested in anthropology, you will want to visit Anasazi State Park, which contains the Escalante area’s most intact Indian ruins. Located in Boulder, approximately 27 miles east of Escalante, the site’s ruins are from one of the largest Anasazi settlements west of the Colorado River, inhabited from approximately A.D. 1050 to 1200. The site’s museum displays relics found in and around the ruins and provides an interesting look into Anasazi culture.

When you stay in Escalante, choose Slot Canyons Inn as your lodging headquarters for exploring the area’s scenic wonders. Located on a scenic 160-acre property on the outskirts of Escalante, our grounds feature Native American ruins, petroglyphs, a private canyon and a two-tiered waterfall. One of the favorite places for our guests to relax is our roof garden, which provides a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.
